The Nettings Do NZ - Week 27

We had a good week hanging out around Christchurch.  This week Kenz and I had a few play dates with Julia and Lucy.  We met them and Hannah and Isabelle at Abberley Park on Tuesday for some play in the kiddie pool.  On Wednesday, Kenz and I had Lucy over while Julia visited a friend nearby.  Kensley and Lucy were super cute.   Kensley was showing Lucy her toys and they were trading water bottles.  I love watching them play together.   Lucy isn’t crawling yet so if Kenlsey would crawl away, Lucy would make some noises and Kensley would make her way back.  In the afternoon, we made our way over to their place for a swim in their little make-shift backyard pool.  We were seeking out opportunities wherever we could to cool down this week because it was HOT!  On Thursday, Kenz and I met up with Kayla and had a great visit/lunch with her.  Truthfully, I was feeling bit lonely this week; not because I don’t see people but because I miss easy conversation with people I know well but Kayla definitely solved this for me!

We were back to our groove on Friday: pizza and wine.   Since we both dream about the amazing wine we had from Villa Maria, I bought their pinot noir ($26ish on sale for $19).  It was nothing special, we give it 3/5.  On Saturday, we did our typical boat shed latte bowls and walk through the gardens.   Then Caleb and I traded off: I ran then he biked.  In the afternoon, we went to get Caleb’s Coast-to-Coast run gear checked.  He has to have all of the kayak, run, and bike gear checked over before race day and on race day.  They are definitely strict; the medical tape in his first aid kit wasn’t wide enough so we had to replace it (the guy had measuring tape).  The concern is, weather can turn pretty quickly where they will be and it’s pretty isolated terrain so if an injury occurred they want you to be equipped while you wait for help.  Then Caleb, Kenz and I had an early dinner and beer on a patio (Kensley basically ate half of my meal - fish from my fish tacos).   On Sunday, Caleb did a practice kayak down the river with a group and we had Sarah babysit in the morning so I could do a run with Liz in the Port Hills.  The rest of the day was pretty quiet and we were happy to have Caleb home in the late afternoon.  He still doesn’t feel great about the kayak but I think he’ll make up for it on the run and bike come race days.   The Coast-to-Coast race (this is for you, Bill) is a multisport race from the west coast to the east coast of NZ (finishes in Christchurch).  It can be done in two days or one, as a team or individual.  Caleb is doing the two day individual.  He says the one day is for hardcores, I guarantee that if he does it again, it'll be the one day :p.  It starts with 2km run off of a beach, 55km road cycle, then 30km mountain run (then 2-dayers stop for the night).  Then 15 km road cycle followed by a 70km kayak which isn't too hard but is really hard if you don't know how to kayak :P and then finish with 70km ride into New Brighton Beach in Christchurch.  We struggled to figure out how I would be Caleb's support person with Kenlsey, and we decided that logistically it was going to be a huge pain, so for a fee, he's joined a team that will transport his gear and have it ready for him at each spot.  It has alleviated a lot of stress for us both so it was worth every penny!

Sunday also marked Kensley’s 10-month birthday!  Where has the time gone?!  In some ways it definitely feels like it’s been 10 months but mostly, it’s flown by!  Each day she is doing something new: mimicking sounds and faces, pointing to things we say (tree, butterfly, bird, star, moon, nose, teeth etc), climbing the stairs and scaring the heck out of us, new dance moves, singing to songs, crawling faster, pulling herself up into standing more easily, and playing hide and seek.  She understands things, more and more each day and is really starting to be able to communicate with us through some signing and pointing.  We think she is starting to get some upper teeth – more drooling and we think we can kind of see them?  Stay tuned.   She also is down to feeding only in the morning and before bed, which gives me hope for my weekend away in a month!

The Nettings Do NZ - Week 26 - The Halfway Mark!

This week we got back into the swing of things with Caleb returning to work and Kensley and I flying solo for the first time in 8+ weeks.  Things went pretty smoothly!  On Monday we got groceries and played it low key.  We had Mary and her friend Andrew over for dinner.  On Tuesday, we met Jacqui and Walt at The Colombo – a cute shopping centre with great boutique stores that is a 2ish k walk from our house.  I don’t think I would’ve found this place without Jacqui recommending it.  In the afternoon, we made our way to the library to meet Julia and Lucy and Hannah and Isabelle.  It was great to see the girls and hear about their holidays.  Kenz, Lucy and Isabelle are definitely interacting more.  Kensley LOVED the library; crawling around the children’s area and paying random strangers a visit.  I also got back into the swing of running with the stroller.   My goal is to run with Kensley only twice a week and then the other days Caleb and I will make it work so that I can go solo.

On Thursday, Sarah came over for the morning with Kensley and I had some time to myself.  Thursday afternoon, Elena and Katya arrived.  Elena is my friend Lisa’s daughter and she and her friend are doing a university semester in Wellington.  The semester doesn’t start until March so they are here to do some traveling and woofing (working on organic farms).  They stayed with us until Sunday and we had a great time with them.  On Friday, the girls let me sneak out for a quick run while Kensley napped then they went to explore.  In the afternoon, we made our way to the Botanic Gardens with a bottle of wine and some pick-its.  Caleb was able to join us a little later, unfortunately for him, the wine was gone :P.  Saturday morning, Caleb tended to Kensley while Elena, Katya and I went to Godley Head for a trail run and I took the girls to this amazing place in Sumner for some ice cream afterwards (they have coconut milk ice cream that I dream about).   In the afternoon, Caleb went to thr river for some kayaking.  When he got home, he, Kensley, Elena and I made our way to a patio for some snacks and beer.  No, we didn’t leave Katya at home; she was born in Christchurch and lived here until age five so she visited an old family friend.   Sunday, the girls moved on to Akoroa for their first woofing gig.  Caleb went to Goat’s Pass (2 hours west), which is where the trail run for The Coast to Coast is.  He feels like he knows most of the running terrain now.  His main concern is his lack of kayak experience but he has two guided trips coming up the next two weekends so hopefully he’ll feel more confident.   Sarah came over for another morning on with Kensley on Sunday, and again, I enjoyed some time to myself!  Sunday afternoon was beautiful so Kensley and I spent much of the day watching the Busker Festival and just playing in the park.  Summer is definitely here but it's been a really nice temperature in the low to mid 20's with a super hot sun.   None of that crazy humidity that we get in Ottawa!

Kensley is pulling herself up onto everything and trying to climb the stairs.  She gets very proud and excited about the little things she does and claps and smiles for herself.  She has rug burn on her knees and shins from non stop crawling.  She isn’t content on the grass by the river, or on the sidewalk – she crawls right for the road.  She absolutely lights up when Caleb gets home from work – she crawls as fast as she can to greet him at the door with big smiles and giggles!   She knows where my nose, teeth and tongue – which was a big surprise to me.  She has started playing hide and seek with me (I hide and she finds me).  The unfortunate thing about summer is that our bedrooms are on the 4th floor of our building.  Kensley’s room has been 27-28 degrees at night which stresses me out slightly.  It doesn’t seem to be affecting her sleep though.

My favorite walking (everything) buddy!

Later mama, dada is home!

She is so proud!

The Nettings Do NZ - Week 25

This week is the continuation of our two-week road trip, as well as our return home.  On Monday we continued to enjoy Titahi Bay, both running the Peninsula.  We then went into town to stock up on some groceries, get a latte, and enjoy “the best fish and chips”.  We have been completely disappointed by coffee once in NZ (at Sumner after our Godley Head run) and Caleb refuses to have another bad coffee so he now reads reviews and rates EVERY place we go; he proudly told me that Google recognizes him as “a local guide”.  He found us an excellent coffee shop and we made our way to the fish and chips spot to find out that it was closed (paper, hand written sign on the door saying they were on holidays).  We’ve actually run into this a few times over the past few weeks.  Apparently, a lot of the country shuts down during the two weeks following Christmas.  We enjoyed the beach and a costal walk during the day.  Tuesday was a big and exhausting day for us.  We were up early to catch our ferry back to the north island (you have to be there an hour before boarding so in total it’s close to 4.5-5 hour affair).  Then we hopped in the car to drive a little under 2 hours west of Picton to Nelson, our last stop.  We were all pretty zonked and done with traveling by the time we arrived.  On Wednesday, Caleb was up early to tackle part of The Abel Tasman, another of the NZ Great Walks.  Kenz and I had a great day hanging out in Nelson.  We went to an amazing vegan restaurant for lunch and both devoured the meal and I enjoyed the BEST coconut latte.  On the walk home I had to get a muffin because I was still hungry…haha but I only had half and saved the other half for Caleb.   Caleb was back in the afternoon so we hit a patio for a beer and burger.  Caleb completely 15 km out and back which was ¼ of the walk.  He said the trail was well made with beautiful beaches and that young kids would be able to do it (for our future).  Thursday, we made the decision to head straight home, which meant our longest day of driving, 5.5hrs.  It actually went pretty smoothly with only two stops.

After a very successful 2-week road trip, we were all happy to be home!  Overall, this trip went far smoother than I had expected.  Kensley was adaptable and slept through the night about half of the nights (otherwise only up once for a quick feed between 3 and 4).  The toughest part for me was feeding Kensley (real food) on the road.  She basically refuses to be fed and so it means we have to find space and food that is easy for her to eat, and healthy, on the go.  I am happy to be back to my kitchen and freezer to have her fed.   On adventures like this, it becomes even more clear to me how much life changes with a baby (as if it hasn’t been clear enough :P).  Sure, Kensley and I could’ve went along on the hikes with Caleb, but the reality is, that isn’t fun for me.  I love her to death but there are things that I much rather do without her, and heading out on a hike is definitely one of those.  I’m just not one of those moms who can throw away our routine completely and have to worry about her needs when I’m trying to do something fun.  So we are doing what works well for us now!  And although I’d rather be hiking, and Caleb would prefer not to be hiking solo, this is life for only a short period.  If only I could find a babysitter at every destination!  Don’t get me wrong, life is good, excellent actually, just different and I’d be a fool to say otherwise.  There was so much more of the north island that we had hoped to do and see, but it will always be there, and we will return, with a little more freedom!  It was Caleb’s hope that we would camp along the way, but the loving husband that he is, allowed me to book places for us to stay the entire time (always with a separate space for Kensley to sleep).

Caleb had to pop into work on Friday for a bit and Kensley and I grabbed groceries and got settled/unpacked.  We were also surprised by the most thoughtful gift from Kensley’s Nonna on Friday.  Chris always gives the most thoughtful gifts (wedding videographer!) so I shouldn’t have been so surprised but it definitely caused some tears.  She made us an amazing photo/memory book with Kensley’s first months of life as well as our first months in New Zealand!  So I had a little facetime catch up with her and Nikki on Friday, which always makes my heart a little fuller! We slide back into Friday night pizza night and red wine very easily.  We enjoyed a Villa Maria red blend but from their basic label at $11.99 (Note you can buy this label in Canada).  For it’s price point it was pretty damn good….not the level of the $70 label but still easy drinking and enjoyable.

On Saturday, we had Sarah babysit Kensley in the morning and enjoyed some time to ourselves.  The crunch is really on for this Coast to Coast race.  Caleb is feeling pressure to get more experience on the river in the kayak but it’s not simple because it’s not something you want to do on your own.  On Sunday, he met up with a group for a kayak on part of the river course but when they arrived, the group decided it was too windy so they just did a road cycle instead.  We also think we have sorted out a support team for Caleb which alleviates a lot of stress for me – the logistics around this race are insane (support are to camp over night and leave by 5am the latest to drop kayaks etc and then there is picking up the bike and dropping it off again and picking up the kayak etc….and this is all on the west coast because they start west coast and finish east coast/Christchurch).   Sunday afternoon we all met up with Mary and her friend Andrew who is visiting from Ireland (but was sporting a Jays hat!).

Kensley is motoring around and so proud to be crawling.  It’s nice because a large amount of frustration has been eliminated.  We definitely have some baby- proofing to do because within a short period of being home she pulled our Christmas tree down on herself.  She has also started to swat at us when she doesn’t want things and throw them.  She LOVES to Facetime with Poppa – she dances, laughs and screams at him.  She is starting to tell us what she wants (will point to her water cup) and is “roughly” signing “all-done” and “more”.   She hates lying down now – in the tub, for diaper changes, it’s like we are offending her (the big girl) by even suggesting it.  I asked her if she wanted to lie down in the tub yesterday and she screamed at me with anger.    She loves to give her stuffed Kiwi bird kisses and laughs her head off about it.   Caleb has started speaking to Kensley in mandarin, which she also likes to laugh about but is super cute.
